The Horizon Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee
Office of Scholarships & Fellowships

Dear Members of the Selection Committee,

It is with the greatest enthusiasm that I recommend Aisha Rahman for the Horizon Foundation Scholarship. Aisha has worked in my biochemistry research laboratory for two years, and among the more than one hundred undergraduates I have mentored, she ranks in the very top two or three. She is precisely the kind of student this scholarship exists to support.

Aisha came to my lab as a sophomore with no research experience and a remarkable willingness to be taught. Within a year she was running her own experiments on enzyme kinetics, and her work became central to a manuscript we have now submitted for publication — a rare achievement for an undergraduate. She did all of this while working twenty hours a week to support her family and maintaining a 3.96 GPA.

Talent is common; Aisha's combination of talent, grit, and grace is not

What moves me most is her purpose. Aisha intends to become a physician-scientist serving the kind of underserved community she grew up in, and she pursues that goal with a seriousness well beyond her years. The financial pressure she carries is real, and this scholarship would let her devote to her studies the energy she now spends worrying about tuition.

I give Aisha Rahman my unqualified and most enthusiastic recommendation. Investing in her is the surest bet your committee could make. I would be glad to speak with you personally about her exceptional promise.

With sincere regard,

Priya Anand, Ph.D.
