How to Make a Lineup Card the Umpire Will Actually Accept

A lineup card is the game's operating document. It tells the umpire who is playing and where, tells the scorekeeper who is due up, and — in leagues with mandatory play rules — it is the proof every kid got in the game. A good one gets filled in once and never questioned. A bad one gets a conference at home plate before the first pitch. The shape is settled: a game header, a numbered batting order or formation, a field diagram, and a bench. What trips people up is the detail — position abbreviations, DH rows, formation numbers that don't add up, and cards with no room to write in the inevitable ninth-inning change.

The Batting Order: Strategy in Nine Rows

The classic order puts speed first (the leadoff hitter's job is to get on base), contact second, the best all-around hitter third, and power fourth — the 'cleanup' spot, batting with the bases loaded as often as possible. Five and six keep rallies alive, and seven through nine turn the lineup back over. In fastpitch softball the same logic holds; in coach-pitch and rec leagues with continuous batting orders, every rostered player bats in turn and the card simply numbers them all. Nine or ten? Nine spots mirror the nine defensive positions. A designated hitter (baseball) or extra hitter (softball) makes ten — slowpitch softball treats the EH as standard. Whatever your league plays, say the count and the card labels the rows correctly.

The Field Diagram Is Not Decoration

Coaches check the diagram against the order before handing the card over — the player listed at shortstop should be the one standing there. The numbers read defense-to-attack and never count the keeper: 2-3-1 for 7v7, 3-2-3 for 9v9, 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 for 11v11. Designing a Card to Be Written On

• Landscape, always. The order and the diagram sit side by side; letter or A4 landscape is the standard for the dugout fence and the clipboard.
• Rows tall enough for a pen. Each batting spot gets a write-in line for substitutions and position changes — the working part of the card.
• An honest bench. Blank lines for substitutes, never invented names — and a notes area for pitching changes and courtesy runners.
• Keep it light. Heavy ink backgrounds smear and waste a cartridge per game. Color belongs in the header and the diagram markings.

Running the Season Off One Design

Print at least three copies per game: umpire, scorekeeper, dugout.
