Double Elimination: The Fairest Format in Brackets
Single elimination is sudden death — one bad game and a season's work is done. Double elimination asks a fairer question: can you lose twice? Until you do, you're still in. That's why it's the standard format for competitive play from softball playoffs to fighting-game majors.
How the two brackets fit together
Everyone starts in the winners' bracket. A loss drops you into the losers' bracket — a parallel tree where every game is elimination. Losers'-bracket rounds alternate between receiving fresh losers from the winners' side and eliminating within the losers' side, so a comeback run means winning a long chain of must-win games. The survivors of both trees meet in the final.
The reset game, explained
The winners'-bracket champion reaches the final undefeated. The losers'-bracket champion has one loss. For both finalists to face equal stakes, the losers'-bracket champion must win twice: the first final resets the bracket, the second — the 'if necessary' game — decides the title. A proper double elimination bracket always includes that reset slot.
