What a Vehicle Bill of Sale Does
A vehicle bill of sale is the written record that you sold your car, truck, or SUV to a specific buyer for a specific price on a specific date. It protects both sides: the seller has proof they no longer own the vehicle, and the buyer has proof of what they paid and the condition they agreed to. It is not the same as the title — the title is the ownership document the state issues, and it transfers separately through the DMV.
The Odometer Disclosure Is Required
Under the federal Truth in Mileage Act, the seller must state the vehicle's mileage at the time of transfer and certify whether it reflects the actual mileage, exceeds the odometer's mechanical limits, or is not the actual mileage. Both the seller and the buyer sign that statement. EZdoc builds this disclosure into every vehicle bill of sale so you don't have to add it yourself.
Sold "As Is"
Most private vehicle sales are "as is" — the seller makes no warranty and the buyer accepts the car in its current condition. A clear as-is clause that names merchantability and fitness, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle free of liens, keeps a private sale clean. After the sale, file your state's notice of transfer or release of liability so you are not on the hook for the buyer's tickets or tolls.
Questions, answered plainly
Does a vehicle bill of sale transfer the title?
No. It records the sale; legal title transfers when the buyer completes title and registration at the state DMV using the signed certificate of title.
Do I need an odometer disclosure?
For most vehicles, yes — federal law requires an odometer statement on transfer. This generator includes it, with the actual-mileage box both parties sign.
Should the bill of sale be notarized?
Most states don't require notarization for a vehicle bill of sale, but a few do. The template includes an optional notary block — confirm your state's rule.
