Nine Rows, Ordered Right
A numbered batting order 1–9 with the player, position abbreviation, and scorebook number in each row — plus a write-in line for the changes every game brings.
DH When You Play With One
Say 'with a DH' and a tenth row appears, labeled correctly. National League rules? Nine honest rows and the pitcher bats.
The Diamond Diagram
Every defensive position labeled and each player placed at their spot — the card the umpire checks against the field before first pitch.
Bench and Pitching Changes
A substitutes block with honest lines and a notes area for pitching changes and courtesy runners — the working parts of a real card.
Filled In or Blank
Supply the roster for a finished card, or leave it off for numbered write-in rows — the classic blank template with your team name up top.
Print-Ready Landscape PDF
Standard letter or A4 landscape, light background, printer-safe margins. Copies for the umpire, the book, and the fence in one download.
The Baseball Lineup Card: Nine Rows That Run the Game
Before the first pitch, two lineup cards cross home plate — and from that moment the card is the game's record of who plays, where, and in what order. The umpire checks it, the scorekeeper works from it, and in mandatory-play leagues it proves every kid got in. It deserves more care than a napkin list.
Build the order with intent
The conventional wisdom survives because it works: on-base speed leads off, contact bats second, the best hitter third, power fourth. After that, alternate your remaining threats so no inning is an easy one — and in youth ball, bat everyone and let the continuous order do the teaching.
Positions are a language
P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF — and their scorebook numbers 1 through 9. The card that uses the real abbreviations is the one the umpire and the book can both read without a translation. The diamond diagram should match the list, player for player; that cross-check is the whole point of having both on one sheet.
Print it to be worked on
Rows tall enough for a pen, a change line beside every spot, an honest bench, and a notes block for pitching changes. Three copies minimum — umpire, scorekeeper, dugout fence. Playing the other diamond sport? The softball guide covers the ten-batter card; the soccer guide swaps the order for a formation sheet.
Questions, answered plainly
What order should my batting lineup be?
The classic shape: speed leads off, your best contact hitter bats second, the best all-around hitter third, and the biggest power bat cleans up fourth. Five and six keep innings alive; seven through nine turn the order over. In youth leagues with continuous batting orders, every rostered player bats in turn — list them all and the card numbers every row.
Nine or ten batters — what's the DH rule?
Nine spots mirror the nine fielders. With a designated hitter, the DH bats in place of the pitcher and the card runs ten rows. Say 'with a DH' and EZdoc labels the row correctly; leave it off and you get the standard nine.
What do the position numbers on a scorecard mean?
Every defensive position has a scorebook number: pitcher 1, catcher 2, first base 3, second base 4, third base 5, shortstop 6, left field 7, center field 8, right field 9. Scorers record plays with them (a 6-4-3 double play goes shortstop to second to first). The card can show the number beside each abbreviation.
Can I make a blank baseball lineup card?
Yes. Describe the card without a roster and every row renders as a numbered write-in line with position labels — the printable template, with your team name, opponent, and date already up top.
How is this different from a softball card?
Mostly the details: softball often bats ten (the extra hitter), sometimes fields four outfielders, and plays on a 60-foot diamond. The softball guide covers that card.
