What a Boat Bill of Sale Records
A boat bill of sale documents the sale and transfer of a vessel from a seller to a buyer. Because a boat sale usually includes a motor and often a trailer, a good bill of sale captures all three in one document, each with its own identifying details and a single agreed price.
The HIN Is the Boat's VIN
Every boat built since 1972 has a Hull Identification Number — a 12-character code on the transom. It identifies the vessel for titling and registration, so it belongs on the bill of sale along with the make, model, year, length, and hull material. For the motor, record the make, horsepower, and engine hours; for the trailer, the make and its own VIN.
Title, Registration, and Release
A bill of sale is not a title. Most states title and register boats above a certain length or horsepower through the state boating or motor-vehicle agency, while large vessels may be documented with the U.S. Coast Guard.
